The third annual G-George event, held at Breighton over the weekend of August 15/16, drew a bumper crowd to the airfield, quite possibly the largest we’ve seen to date. The resident fleet of historic aircraft was further enhanced by the addition of a selection of warbirds including a Hawker Hurricane Mk I V7497, Douglas C-47A Skytrain N473DC, North American T-6 Harvard IV AJ841 and, of course, a pair of Spitfires – Mk Vc EE602 and Mk IXc MK912. The two Spitfires were put through their paces on Saturday evening in a stunning 2-ship flying display flown by Steve Jones and George Haye respectively.

Many of the visiting warbirds have well documented combat histories. The Hurricane is a Battle of Britain veteran, the Dak took part in Operation Overlord (D-Day) and Market Garden (with battle scars to prove it) and the Normandy Spitfire, MK912, as its nickname suggests, took part in Operation Overlord and is believed to have been the first Spitfire to land in France after D-Day and make it back to Britain.

Our own ‘small warbird’ fleet were also in action during the weekend, including the Ryan PT22 making a rare outing in its new military markings.

The event also attracted wartime re-enactors, military vehicles, period transport, stalls, displays and musical entertainment from the Driffield Silver Band (who will also be at our Proms event) and Ashlea Lauren.
